Former Ugandan footballer Ibrahim Buwembo, known for his career as a left winger for Uganda Cranes and Express Football Club, has sadly passed away. Buwembo, who had been a prominent figure in the radio sports punditry scene for the past decade, died on Friday at Mengo Hospital after a period of illness. He was 71 years old.
During his playing days, Buwembo gained a reputation for being highly controversial. In 1992, he achieved success by winning the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup with the Uganda Cranes. Additionally, he was part of the Express side that secured victory in the 2001 Uganda Cup. Throughout his career, Buwembo played for various clubs including State House, Coffee, Super Cubs, Simba, and also had stints in clubs located in the Middle East.
In his later life, Buwembo encountered several conflicts with club administrators regarding his involvement in player transfers to Asia, particularly Vietnam. He faced criticism and had run-ins with officials over these dealings.
