New leader refuses to accept presidential salary

Thursday, October 26, 2023 | Thursday, October 26, 2023 WIB Last Updated 2024-08-12T07:53:04Z
Gen Brice Oligui Nguema, the military leader of Gabon, has recently announced his decision to forgo his presidential salary and instead receive a wage solely as the commander of the republican guard. He assumed the role of interim president after the ousting of President Ali Bongo in August.

The junta spokesperson made the announcement on Wednesday evening, stating that Gen Nguema made this choice due to his awareness of the pressing social issues and high expectations of the Gabonese people. According to Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi, each passing day reveals the country's increasingly deteriorating state and particularly concerning public finances.

During the 14-year rule of the deposed President Bongo, there were numerous allegations of corruption and financial scandals. The junta claims that the country's finances have become victims of severe criminal activities.

In addition to renouncing his presidential salary, Gen Nguema has implemented various measures to reduce public expenditure. These measures include cutting allowances for lawmakers, eliminating political funds, and reducing session allowances. The presidency has stated that these actions aim to strengthen the state's financial resources.

This recent development is perceived as an effort to regain the trust and confidence of the Gabonese people in their country's leadership.
